This is a test shoot with Rasa before she left Ottawa for her native Lithuania. With the winter in full effect and cabin fever setting in, getting out of the house is key to retaining sanity. We just wanted to shoot something. Like what? Let’s shoot creative. When? Tomorrow. Will it get us out of the house? Yes. Ok let’s do it!
We got our team together to shoot in a backroom at lovely and accommodating Sidedoor Restaurant on a freezing afternoon Lyz on make up, and Lori for hair. We had a vaguely loose concept in mind (too loose to explain) and so we all met up on the coldest Sunday of all-time to photograph Rasa. As Rasa is having her hair and make up done, we’re are fiddling with lights, setting up flashes, softboxes, gels – you name it, it was going on a lightstand. After about an hour of fiddling around with light positions and intensities, we finally get to shooting. Check the results. Something’s weird… The scene was looking one way, but it needed to look another. Back to the drawing board. After simplifying the setup to the point of a dark room, we turned on the iPhone’s flashlight mode to look for the room’s light switch – Hold on…Let’s just grab one of those glass vases from the table…aim the light through the vase – bingo. Now this wasn’t a perfect solution (though there rarely are) – the iPhone’s flashlight is bright but not photography bright, so this required a higher than usual ISO and a slow shutter speed (hence some artsy blur). Threw in another phone’s flashlight on the background, mixed with a flash here and there…Ok, enough with the technicals – les experiments below.
(some titles sound better in Spanish) – A pictorialist version…
Sometimes you’ve got enough shoots in the vault, that you’ve gotta pace them out…It’s a surprise that we could even keep a secret for so long and not succumb to the usual ‘reveals’ on Instagram! Our good friend Kirsty proposed that our location be at a lovely Estate in Merrickville… One look, and we were sold. Every room was delightfully decorated, spacious, and unique. We had a lot of incredible vendors work on this with us, credits are below – we can’t thank our team enough. So much love for this one! I’m not a big fan of over-explaining visuals, so here is the fruit of our labour. Enjoy it! Let the shots speak for themselves. (And before ask, yes that Fleur of England Ashley is wearing in the first shot is available in Ottawa – at Amanda May Lingerie). A big thank you to Burnett’s Boards for publishing this piece of our imaginations.
