This is a test shoot with Rasa before she left Ottawa for her native Lithuania. With the winter in full effect and cabin fever setting in, getting out of the house is key to retaining sanity. We just wanted to shoot something. Like what? Let’s shoot creative. When? Tomorrow. Will it get us out of the house? Yes. Ok let’s do it!
We got our team together to shoot in a backroom at lovely and accommodating Sidedoor Restaurant on a freezing afternoon Lyz on make up, and Lori for hair. We had a vaguely loose concept in mind (too loose to explain) and so we all met up on the coldest Sunday of all-time to photograph Rasa. As Rasa is having her hair and make up done, we’re are fiddling with lights, setting up flashes, softboxes, gels – you name it, it was going on a lightstand. After about an hour of fiddling around with light positions and intensities, we finally get to shooting. Check the results. Something’s weird… The scene was looking one way, but it needed to look another. Back to the drawing board. After simplifying the setup to the point of a dark room, we turned on the iPhone’s flashlight mode to look for the room’s light switch – Hold on…Let’s just grab one of those glass vases from the table…aim the light through the vase – bingo. Now this wasn’t a perfect solution (though there rarely are) – the iPhone’s flashlight is bright but not photography bright, so this required a higher than usual ISO and a slow shutter speed (hence some artsy blur). Threw in another phone’s flashlight on the background, mixed with a flash here and there…Ok, enough with the technicals – les experiments below.
